Butser Ancient Farm

Smaller Roundhouses

The smaller double ring roundhouse is based upon an excavation at Moel y Gerddi, Dyfed in Wales. It represents a typical working farmhouse. Unlike the Great Roundhouse, there is no evidence for a porch, but in its earliest phase it had diametrically opposed doorways. The diameter of this house is just over 9 metres with a floor area of 67 square metres.

The two smallest houses in the enclosure are based upon ground plans excavated at the Glastonbury Lake Village in Somerset. In contrast to the Great Roundhouse these are relatively simple buildings. We think that two or three of these structures would have formed a household, each one performing the function of a room. Some might have been used to hold livestock during the winter.
