Butser Ancient Farm: History and Development. The history and development of the Ancient Farm as a research programme, its research philosophy and methodology, its employment in education and its relationship with the public.
Experimental Archaeology: A Perspective for the Future. Details and examples of the five distinct categories of research at Butser Ancient Farm, including constructs, storage pits, earthworks and crops.
The Life and Death of a Post-Hole. Specific discoveries made during the dismantlement of the Pimperne round-house which bear considerable significance for the future analysis of prehistoric round-houses.
The Food of the Prehistoric Celts. Details of ards and ploughs, and the crops of the Iron Age and how they supplemented the other food sources of the prehistoric Celts
Volume 2
Deadstock and Livestock. An analysis of agricultural practice from both the arable and pastoral aspects. Includes analysis of ploughing equipment.
Crop Yields of the Prehistoric Cereal Types Emmer and Spelt: The Worst Option. A discussion of the data achieved from 15 years of research at the Ancient Farm.
Romano-British Corn Drying Oven: An Experiment. The report of a series of trials in a construct of a so-called Romano-British grain drier which demonstrates that these structures are most probably malting houses.
Volume 3
Rural Life and Farming. An analysis of the nature of farming in prehistory based upon the archaeological data and the constraints of climate and natural materials.
Slash and Burn Experiment. An experiment to examine the comparative yield performance of Emmer wheat on burned and unburned plots within an artificial clearing. The natural plant regeneration was also studied.
The Medieval Fence. A physical construct of a typical medieval fence based upon both archaeological and representational, usually Ecclesiastic art.
Volume 4
Experimental Reconstruction. The report of a specific construction based upon the excavation of a great roundhouse at Pimperne Down in Dorset, including an account of the life of the structure and its final dismantlement.
Medieval Cereal Yields: an Empirical Challenge. A report of the research programmes at L'Esquerda, Osona, in Catalonia, and a comparison with similar research programmes at Butser Ancient Farm.
The Nature of Experiment in Archaeology. A discussion paper which seeks to determine what constitutes an experiment, and what does not, in archaeology today. The actual nature of experiment is explored and analysed.
