Sherd Movement in the Plough Zone : 2

This paper is the second stage in reporting Peter Reynolds' research at Butser Ancient Farm and elsewhere on the fate of sherds, both natural and artificial, when subject to ploughing. It complements the paper on the work that led up to these studies at Manor Farm, Chalton, Hamphsire UK on the movement of artificial sherds under modern ploughing conditions.

These studies were still under way at the time of Peter's death. The studies were due to be extended but fell by the wayside.

The paper here was published in "Computer and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology 1988 ed. SPQ Rahtz, BAR International Series 446(ii) pp 201-218". It was given as paper 15 : "Sherd Movement in the Ploughzone - physical data base into computer simulation". Reynolds acknowledged that the paper drew heavily on the work of Yorston and Gaffney ... see references in the paper below.

This paper [in Adobe format] is the only presentation of the work undertaken on this topic at Butser Ancient Farm.
