The Matrica Museum, Szazhalombatta, outside Budapest, Hungary was one of the first "outstations" to follow guidelines for archaeological experiments, as laid down for them by Peter Reynolds. The Director, the late Ildiko Poroszlai, kept in close contact for many years.
Many years after this contact was established, an International Conference "Archaeology of the Bronze and Iron Age", embracing Experimental Archaeology, Environmental Archaeology and Archaeological Parks was held at Szazhalombatta between 3rd - 7th October 1996.
At this Conference, Peter Reynolds gave his definitive lecture on the topic of the "Nature of Experiment in Archaeology" based on more than 25 years endeavour in the field. This page gives the full published paper with full references, not published until 1999. It was also published in 1999 in a condensed, unreferenced form as a chapter in a book in honour of John Coles, one of the "founding fathers" of the Butser Project and an early leading figure in UK Experimental Archaeology. The two versions may be compared on this website.
