Domestic fowl

The following early paper is the only paper known to discuss the issues surrounding the keeping of fowl in the Iron Age. At the Demonstration Site at BAF, the keeping of fowl within the context of animal husbandry ia discussed, along with the limited archaeological data. Reference to Roman commentators is also made. It is suggested that the Indian Red Jungle Fowl was present as early as the Bronze Age being succeeded by the Old English Game over time. The Romans appear to have had a wide range of farmyard fowl and a number of possibilities exist, including birds similar to the Black Red and the Golden Duckwing.

The item was published in an early edition of The Journal of the World Pheasant Association. Journal III 1977-1978 pp60-64.
