Butser Ancient Farm

The BAF Research Project 1976

The following document is representative of many of the early publications about the development of the "Butser Concept". Over time, a variety of differing details was presented in such reports, even though there now seems a measure of repetition. What tends to be forgotten is that this venture was not only the first of its kind but it was very new and excited world wide interest.

There are two other points of significance about this publication. It shows that as early as 1976, i.e. a mere 4 years after breaking turf for the first time, the Farm had broken onto the international scene, for Europe was in the van of the Experimental Archaeological movement. Secondly, even though th Conference as sponsored by the Council of Europe, this record was printed on low quality paper with rudimentary printing techniques. Though there may be complaints about EA funding in this day and age, it must surely have been tougher in the early days.
