Butser Ancient Farm

Project Consultant : Christine Shaw

BAFDA 1976

After the Research Site of the Butser Ancient Farm Project had been established, from 1972 onwards, agreement was reached with Hampshire County Council to extend the project to embrace a new public demonstration area within the land designated for the Queen Elizabeth Country Park, which was itself a new venture for them.

This became known as the Butser Ancient Farm Demonstration Area [BAFDA]. The pamphlet provided here was produced for the opening. It shows how much was owed to the Avoncroft exercise but draws on further work at the Research Site, not covered by any formal pamphlet, as that was not a public area. Two significant elements emerged from the work on that site. Firstly, the ability to build very large roundhouses, illustrated by the Pimperne House. Secondly, the Pimperne House was surrounded by a ditch and bank system, that later evolved into a major research programme of its own. Such elements did not exist at Avoncroft.

Dr Peter Reynolds wrote the pamphlet. The only known copy was found in his files quite recently and is reproduced here for purposes of record and research.
