The Bascomb Down Site

Since the operation the Farm has been Licenced to Butser Archaeological Centre Limited, effective April 2007, all opeartions at Bascomb up to that date have been embraced within the History of the Farm under this Website.

This page is under development.

As a start, this element from earlier pages has been introduced but covers only a tiny part of the events from 1991 to 2007.

One of the earliest activities in transferring whatever could be re-utilised from the Demonstration Site, was the moving of the metal working shed as described under The Demonstration Site.

The latest style of junction between the roof and porch, as suggested by a modern thatcher, can be seen with the present Longbridge Deveril House at the next site on Bascomb Down, shown below. The full benefit of this approach was not realised, because the roof suffered a major structural shift under the influence of construction deficiencies in the hasty move from the Demonstration Site in 1991, combined with the lodging of water associated with this. The load from the extra thatch, some joint and rafter weaknesses and continual rain and wind lead to a lateral displacement of the whole ringbeam / pillar assembly. This will be illustrated under that site's pages.
