Core Research Programmes at and Associated with Butser Ancient Farm

Both long and short term programmes are carried out under the aegis of Butser Ancient Farm. Many of the studies have the weather as one of the major input variables. In the case of, say, crop yield experiments, earthworks studies or studies on the behaviour of buildings (to name only some examples) even 20 years results may not guaranteee a full picture of the consequences for survival, when weather goes to its extremes. Where such studies are carried out a Weather Station is always installed so that climate data may routinely be recorded (where resources allow this will incorporate an automated data logger).

This section deals principally with the backgrounds to the programmes and their locations. Results from the work so far will either be found in some of the sections under The Impacts of Experiment or in Publications or they may still be in preparation. It should be recognised that Dr Reynolds published widely over several decades and the Butser publications represent only a small part of his formal published record, the whole of which is given under the History banner.

For reasons of record, all the headings on this page, as they existed at the time of Dr Reynolds death, have been retained. Where work has ceased in any given area, the key {inactive} has been added, to allow work to recommence as opportunity arises. There will still be a summary of the present status on the relevant pages. Some of these programmes will be carried out under the Licence, others under the aegis of the Trust and the rest under the control of Chrisitne Shaw.
