RECENT PROGRESS ON THE ROMAN VILLA

As the Trust's Chairman has said funding support from the Discovery Channel was crucial to new progress. To accommodate their needs, after much heart-searching, and finally dictated by the need to level the site because of the excessive slope recognised during a final survey, all the work so lovingly carried out by Peter Reynolds, as his last contribution before his death, was removed. This decision was taken as a second stage, at the end of August 2002.

The view, at the first stage, after removing the floor was much as below and the top of the praefurnian arch, of which Peter was so proud, can just be seen at the centre rear of the picture.

The hypocaust is now being reconstructed under the protection of a marquee and will be photographed this weekend ( 9th/10th November 2002) for presentation here.

Over the coming months updated pictures will be posted here.

Roman builder Tim Edwards (Young Tim) hard at work. He was one of the full-time builders all summer.
Left at the end of September to go back to Exeter University for his final year. We're missing him !
