Butser Ancient Farm

OPEN WEEKEND 26th/27th JUNE 2004

ROMAN COOKING

Visitors to Butser Ancient Farm stepped back in time to watch the preparation of a Roman feast. . Happily the miserable rain on Saturday didn’t dampen enthusiasm for experiencing the past. Author and cook Sally Grainger worked on both days to prepare a range of dishes which would have been familiar to the original occupants of the Roman villa. To modern tastes, the most popular were a tangy garlic cheese and a delicious pear patina, an egg custard. Visitors also wove beautiful chaplets from periwinkle and other herbs and flowers similar to those worn by guests to Roman banquets and made sweet breadcakes to take home.

The next Open Weekend will be on 24th/25th July. The site will be open from 10am – 5pm each day. For this weekend we go further back in time to look at what and how the Celts cooked.
