CELTIC HARVEST FESTIVAL

27th/28th September 2003

Butser Ancient Farm closed its 2003 season in
fine style with a Celtic Harvest Festival. The
theme of the weekend was FUN with games,
quizzes and activities as varied as an Obtacle
Course, 'Feely Boxes' containing natural
materials, mosaics, bread making, and the ever
popular archaeology trenches. Visitors also

had the opportunity to watch a roundhouse
being thatched, see pottery being fired and
learn how to turn wood and spin wool using a
drop spindle and also discuss the use of herbs
in daily life in Iron Age and Roman Britain.
There were also guided tours of the nearly
completed Roman villa.

Christine Shaw, principal of Butser Ancient
Farm said that she had been delighted with this
the last Open Weekend of the season, 'We had
a lot of  visitors and I was so pleased to see
that they all seemed to enjoy themselves so
much. I have a wonderful team of volunteers
who help to make these weekends a success
not only for the Farm but also for our the
people who come to see us'.

Butser Ancient Farm will open to the public again
on March 27th and 28th 2004 when the Roman villa
will be officially opened in the presence of the
Roman legion II Augusta.

More details will be available on the Farm's
